If you run a shop, stall, clinic, coaching class, or freelance service in India, you have probably been asked "UPI kar do?" more times than you can count. Cash still exists — but UPI has become the default for everyday payments. The good news: you do not need expensive hardware or a long bank visit to start accepting money. A printed QR code on your counter can be enough.

This guide is written for business owners and freelancers, not for people who just want a technical definition of UPI. We cover the operational questions that actually matter — charges, limits, scams, printing, tax records — and show you how to create a free QR in minutes. When you are ready to generate yours, use our UPI QR Code Generator (no signup, works in your browser).

Why every Indian business should accept UPI QR payments

UPI processed billions of transactions last year across BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and bank apps. For a small business, the advantages are practical:

Whether you sell from a physical shop, deliver tiffins, tutor students, or invoice clients monthly, a visible UPI QR removes friction at the moment of payment — exactly when you are most likely to lose a sale to "I don't have change."

This article does not rehash basic UPI definitions — our generator tool page already covers formats and downloads. Here we focus on the decisions Indian business owners actually Google at midnight: Will I be charged? What are the limits? How do I print it? How do I avoid fraud?

UPI QR codes in 60 seconds: static vs dynamic

Before you create anything, understand the two types of merchant QR codes in India:

How to create your UPI QR code for free — step by step

Here is the fastest path from zero to a working shop QR. You can complete this in under five minutes.

  1. Confirm you can receive UPI. You need an active bank account linked to UPI — through your bank app, BHIM, PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm. Note your UPI ID (e.g. yourshop@okhdfcbank) or the mobile number / bank details linked to UPI.
  2. Choose your input type. Most shopkeepers use a UPI ID. Some prefer bank account + IFSC, mobile number, or Aadhaar-linked UPI depending on how their account is set up. See the next section if you are unsure.
  3. Open the UPI QR Code Generator. No login required — it runs in your browser on phone or desktop.
  4. Enter your payee name. Use the name customers should see when paying — your shop name or registered business name. This builds trust at checkout.
  5. Add optional amount and note. Leave amount blank for a flexible static QR (customer enters bill total). Add a fixed ₹ amount if every payment should be the same (e.g. ₹500 consultation fee).
  6. Generate and download. Download PNG for WhatsApp, SVG for designers, or the A4 shop poster PDF if you want a print-ready counter standee with your QR and business name.
  7. Test before you print. Scan with your own phone using a different UPI app or a family member's phone. Send ₹1, confirm the payee name and amount display correctly, then void or adjust your records.
  8. Print, laminate, display. Place at eye level near the billing counter. See our printing tips below.

Which payment-address type should you use?

The generator supports four input modes. Pick the one that matches how you already receive UPI:

UPI ID (VPA) — most common for shops

Your Virtual Payment Address looks like merchantname@bankhandle. It is the cleanest option for most businesses — customers see a familiar format, and it works across all UPI apps. If your bank gave you a UPI ID when you registered, start here.

Bank account + IFSC

Useful if you want payments routed directly via account details encoded in the QR. Some accountants prefer this for businesses that have not branded a UPI handle yet. Ensure IFSC and account number are double-checked — errors mean lost payments.

Mobile number

Works when your mobile is the primary UPI identifier (many PhonePe / Paytm business setups). Good for solo freelancers who customers already save as a contact. Display your number on the same poster so customers can verify.

Aadhaar-linked UPI

Less common at shop counters but supported for recipients who receive via Aadhaar-enabled UPI. Confirm with your bank that Aadhaar receiving is active before printing.

Rule of thumb: kirana and retail → UPI ID. Home-based seller who shares QR on WhatsApp → UPI ID or mobile. New business still setting up banking → bank + IFSC until your UPI ID is confirmed.

Are there any charges? (the question everyone asks)

Short answer: for most small merchants accepting UPI from customer bank accounts, you pay nothing to receive money. That is why UPI spread so fast among vegetable vendors and tailors — not because of marketing, but because the economics work.

Here is the fuller picture every shop owner should know:

P2P vs P2M (person-to-merchant)

When a customer pays your business QR, the transaction is typically classified as person-to-merchant (P2M), not a personal transfer between friends. P2M routing is what enables proper merchant records and zero MDR on standard UPI debit/bank payments.

MDR — merchant discount rate

MDR is the fee deducted from a merchant before settlement. On regular UPI collections to your bank account from customer savings/current accounts, MDR is zero for most categories — you receive ₹500, you get ₹500. This policy is a major reason UPI replaced card machines for small tickets.

The RuPay credit-on-UPI nuance

When customers pay using a credit card via UPI (RuPay credit line on UPI), interchange fees may apply — similar to card payments. As a shopkeeper you may still receive the full amount while the customer's bank or card network handles fees differently. If a large share of your customers pay by credit-on-UPI, ask your bank about your specific MDR category.

What can cost money?

A laminated static QR you generate for free and print at the local Xerox shop? No ongoing charges.

One more nuance: person-to-person (P2P) transfers between individuals are not the same as customer-to-shop payments. If customers mistakenly send money to your personal UPI as a "friend" transfer instead of scanning your merchant QR, reporting and GST treatment can get messy. Train regulars to scan the shop QR on the counter — not your personal handle — so payments classify cleanly in your bank statement.

UPI transaction and QR limits you should know

Limits protect customers and banks from fraud. They also explain why a ₹2 lakh sale sometimes fails on UPI.

Displaying "UPI up to ₹X" on your counter sets expectations and reduces awkward failed transactions at billing time.

A QR nobody can scan is worse than no QR. Presentation matters:

Replace the QR if you change bank accounts or UPI ID. Old QR stickers receiving payments into a closed account create reconciliation nightmares.

Staying safe: avoiding UPI QR scams and fraud

UPI fraud targets busy shopkeepers during rush hour. A few habits prevent most losses:

You scan to pay — customers scan to pay you

You should almost never scan a customer's QR to "receive" money. That flow sends money from your account. Scammers show a fake "refund" or "verification" QR; you scan it and authorize a debit. To collect payment, the customer scans your QR or enters your UPI ID.

Fake QR sticker swaps

Criminals replace shop QR stickers with codes linked to their accounts — especially on shared market stalls. Check your laminated QR daily. Tamper-evident tape or a unique shop border design makes swaps obvious.

Verify payee name before confirming

When testing or when a staff member accepts payment, confirm the app shows your business name before the customer enters their PIN. A mismatch means the wrong QR is displayed.

Never share OTP, PIN, or remote-access apps

No bank or genuine customer needs your UPI PIN or OTP to send you money. Callers claiming "failed payment, share OTP to reverse" are scammers. Hang up.

Beware of overpayment refunds

A classic scam: customer "accidentally" pays too much, asks for cash refund, then reverses the UPI transaction. Refund only through the same UPI channel after confirming settlement, or refuse cash refunds for digital overpayments.

Staff training

If employees handle payments, give them a one-page rule sheet: check name, never scan unknown QRs, confirm amount on your phone notification before handing goods.

During festival seasons when footfall spikes, fraud attempts rise too. Consider keeping a backup QR printed at home — if your counter code is tampered with, you can replace it the same day without losing evening sales.

UPI QR vs Paytm / PhonePe / Google Pay merchant QR and soundbox

Payment apps aggressively sell merchant QRs and soundboxes — and they work well. But you do not always need them.

When a free static QR is enough:

When a provider merchant QR or soundbox helps:

Many businesses use a free printed NPCI QR on the counter plus a PhonePe or Paytm soundbox linked to the same account — not either/or. Start free; upgrade when volume justifies it.

If you sell online and offline together, combine a counter QR with digital links: Instagram bio, WhatsApp catalogues, and PDF invoices can all point to the same payment address — customers pay the way that fits the moment.

Tax and GST on UPI payments

UPI receipts are business income. How you accept payment does not change tax obligations.

This is general information, not tax advice. Consult a chartered accountant for your registration threshold and filing requirements.

Troubleshooting common UPI QR problems

QR not scanning

Increase print size, improve lighting, clean the laminate, and ensure the QR is not cropped. Try another phone camera. Regenerate at higher resolution from the generator.

Wrong name showing when customer pays

The payee name comes from your UPI registration — update it in your bank or UPI app profile, then regenerate the QR.

Amount not pre-filling

Only QRs generated with a preset amount embed that value. Blank amount QRs require manual entry — by design for variable billing.

Payment fails for customer

Check their daily limit, internet connection, and whether they are paying from a newly registered UPI ID. Try a smaller test amount.

App says "invalid QR"

Confirm the QR is NPCI UPI format, not a unrelated payment link. Regenerate from the tool and avoid re-encoding a screenshot multiple times.

Frequently asked questions

Is a UPI QR code free for shops?

Yes. Creating and displaying a static UPI QR code is free. You do not pay NPCI or your bank to generate a standard QR that customers scan to pay you. Some payment providers charge for soundboxes, dynamic QR dashboards, or premium merchant services — but a basic printed QR at your counter costs nothing to set up.

Do I pay charges to receive UPI payments?

For most person-to-merchant UPI collections on debit and bank accounts, MDR (merchant discount rate) is zero — meaning you receive the full amount. Exceptions apply mainly to credit-card-on-UPI and certain commercial card categories, where a small fee may be deducted. Always confirm with your bank if you accept high-value or card-funded UPI regularly.

Can I use one QR for Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm?

Yes. A standard NPCI-compliant UPI QR works across BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and other UPI apps. Customers scan with whichever app they prefer; the payment routes to your linked account or UPI ID.

What is the limit on UPI QR payments?

Limits depend on your bank, customer profile, and transaction type. Many retail UPI payments are capped around ₹1 lakh per transaction for standard users, with daily limits set by your bank. New UPI users often have lower limits for the first 24 hours. For very large amounts, customers may need to use NEFT/RTGS or split payments.

Can I create a UPI QR without a bank app?

You need a valid UPI payment address linked to a bank account — usually created through your bank app or a UPI app first. Once you have a UPI ID, mobile-linked UPI, or bank account details, you can generate a printable QR using a free online generator without staying inside any single bank interface.

Should I use static or dynamic QR for my shop?

Most small shops and freelancers do fine with a static QR (same code, customer enters amount). Dynamic QR (new code per transaction with a fixed amount) suits businesses that need exact amounts pre-filled, delivery riders, or automated reconciliation. See the decision table in this guide for your business type.
