Gold Calculator
This free gold calculator finds the value of gold based on its weight, purity (karat), and the current gold price. Whether you are valuing jewelry, scrap gold, coins, or bullion, it converts weight and purity into a clear dollar (or local-currency) figure. Enter the weight, select the karat, and add the current gold price per gram or ounce to see the gold's value.
How to Use the Gold Calculator
- Enter the weight of the gold (grams or ounces).
- Select the purity (karat) — 24K, 22K, 18K, 14K, 10K.
- Enter the current gold price.
- Calculate — see the gold value.
How Gold Value Is Calculated
Gold Value = Weight × (Karat ÷ 24) × Price per Unit
Pure gold is 24 karat. Lower karats contain less gold, so the purity fraction (karat ÷ 24) scales the value. For example, 10 grams of 18K gold at a price of $60/gram is 10 × (18 ÷ 24) × 60 = $450.
Gold Purity by Karat
| Karat | Gold Content |
|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% (pure) |
| 22K | 91.7% |
| 18K | 75.0% |
| 14K | 58.3% |
| 10K | 41.7% |
Melt Value vs Resale Value
The calculator gives the melt value — the worth of the raw gold content. When selling scrap or jewelry, dealers typically pay a percentage below melt value to cover refining and profit, while jewelry sold at retail costs more than melt value because of craftsmanship and markup. Knowing the melt value helps you judge whether an offer is fair.
Why Use a Gold Calculator?
- Value jewelry, scrap, or coins before selling.
- Check that a buyer's offer is reasonable.
- Track the worth of your gold holdings as prices change.
- Compare items of different karats fairly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate the value of gold?
Multiply the weight by the purity fraction (karat ÷ 24) and by the current gold price per unit. 10 g of 18K gold at $60/g is worth $450.
What does karat mean?
Karat measures gold purity out of 24. 24K is pure gold, 18K is 75% gold, and 14K is about 58% gold, with the rest being other metals.
What is gold melt value?
Melt value is the worth of the pure gold content in an item. It is the baseline value before any dealer markup or deduction.
Why do buyers pay less than melt value?
Scrap and jewelry buyers pay below melt value to cover refining costs and profit. Knowing the melt value helps you assess whether an offer is fair.
Is this gold calculator free?
Yes — it is completely free, requires no signup, and values gold by weight and purity.
