What Is an ISBN Barcode?
An ISBN barcode is the scannable black-and-white striped image printed on the back cover of virtually every book sold commercially. It is the visual, machine-readable representation of a book's ISBN (International Standard Book Number) — encoded in the internationally recognised EAN-13 barcode format.
When a bookseller, librarian, or warehouse scanner scans the barcode on a book, the EAN-13 code resolves to the ISBN, which in turn identifies the exact title, edition, format, and publisher of that specific book in global databases.
An ISBN-13 barcode encodes three things:
- The GS1 book prefix —
978or979(universally assigned to books worldwide) - The publisher and title identifier — assigned by your national ISBN agency
- A single check digit — mathematically derived from the preceding 12 digits to validate the number
What Is an ISBN? The Complete Guide
Before generating a barcode, it's important to understand the ISBN system itself — because the barcode is only as valid as the ISBN it encodes.
ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. It is a 13-digit numeric identifier assigned to a specific edition and format of a book. No two books — or even two editions or formats of the same book — share an ISBN.
- Every edition gets its own ISBN: hardcover, paperback, ebook, and audiobook each require a separate ISBN
- ISBNs are assigned by national ISBN agencies — in India by Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency; in the UK by Nielsen; in the USA by Bowker
- ISBN-13 has been the global standard since January 2007, replacing the older 10-digit format (ISBN-10)
- ISBN-13 numbers always begin with
978or979
| Feature | ISBN-10 | ISBN-13 |
|---|---|---|
| Digits | 10 | 13 |
| Prefix | None | 978 or 979 |
| Standard since | 1970 | 2007 |
| Barcode format | Bookland EAN | EAN-13 |
| Convert from ISBN-10 | Add 978 prefix, recalculate check digit | — |
If you have an ISBN-10, convert it to ISBN-13 by prepending 978 and recalculating the check digit. This tool accepts ISBN-10 (auto-converted) and ISBN-13.
How to Generate an ISBN Barcode — Step by Step
Step 1 — Enter Your ISBN-13
Type or paste your 13-digit ISBN. You can enter it with or without hyphens:
978-3-16-148410-0 or 9783161484100
The tool validates the ISBN automatically and alerts you if the check digit is incorrect.
Step 2 — Add Display Text (Optional)
Add a label below the barcode — book title, publisher name, or price. This does not affect scannability.
Step 3 — Generate the Barcode
Click Generate Barcode to render the EAN-13 barcode instantly with correct bar widths, quiet zones, and human-readable number display.
Step 4 — Download the PNG
Click Download PNG for use with cover designers, Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, Lulu, Notion Press, or Adobe InDesign.
Where Does the ISBN Barcode Go on a Book Cover?
The standard placement is the lower-right corner of the back cover.
- Minimum size: 80% of nominal (29.85mm × 20.74mm) — never smaller
- Preferred size: 100% nominal (37.29mm × 25.93mm) or larger
- Quiet zone: At least 3mm white space left and right, 2mm top and bottom
- Colour: Black bars on white background is standard
- Resolution: Print at minimum 300 DPI; 600 DPI recommended for professional printing

How to Get an ISBN (Before You Generate the Barcode)
You must obtain a valid ISBN before generating a barcode — you cannot create a valid ISBN yourself.
- India: Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency — isbn.gov.in (free for Indian publishers)
- United Kingdom: Nielsen — isbn.nielsenbook.co.uk
- United States: Bowker — myidentifiers.com
- Pakistan: National Library of Pakistan
- Print-on-Demand: Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, and Lulu offer free ISBNs (platform listed as publisher of record)
Once an ISBN is assigned to a specific edition and format, it cannot be reused. A new edition or format requires a new ISBN — and therefore a new barcode.
Validating Your ISBN Before Generating
A valid ISBN-13 must pass check digit validation. The check digit (13th digit) is calculated from the first 12 digits using the EAN-13 algorithm:
- Multiply alternating digits by 1 and 3 (starting with 1 for the first digit)
- Sum all the products
- Check digit =
(10 - (sum mod 10)) mod 10
This tool validates the check digit automatically and alerts you if the ISBN fails validation.
Tips for Print-Ready Barcode Quality
- Use the PNG at Full Resolution — Do not scale below 80% of nominal size
- Do Not Apply Filters or Effects — Blur, shadow, or emboss causes scanning failures
- Maintain the Quiet Zone — Never crop into the white space on either side
- Test Before Final Print — Scan with Google Lens or a barcode app to verify
- Use Sufficient Contrast — Black on white is ideal; use a light background patch on coloured covers
- Communicate DPI to Your Designer — Place at 300 DPI minimum; do not upscale a small PNG
Print-on-Demand Platform Requirements
- Amazon KDP — If using your own ISBN, include the barcode in your cover PDF at 300 DPI minimum
- IngramSpark — Barcode must be embedded in cover PDF; they do not add it automatically
- Lulu — Adds barcode automatically for Lulu-assigned ISBNs; supply your own if using personal ISBN
- Notion Press / Pothi (India) — Include barcode in cover file per platform template specifications
- Offset / Commercial Printing — PDF with 300–600 DPI, CMYK, barcode in lower-right back cover
